Takejiro Tokonami, ex-Minister of Home 2I if airs in the Japanese Cabinet, has been elected president of the Seiyuhonto Party. Mr Herbert George Ponting, who was photographic officer to the British Antarctic Expedition, in 19110-13, has presented to the nation six negatives found beside the body of Captain Scott. They will form the nucleus of a British Museum memorial to the fatal expedition. Consequent upon the recent decision of the House of Commons an early effort is to be made to induce the Federal Parliament to abolish tariff duties which give preference to British goods. In the Senate Senatars Duncan and Lynch have given notices of motion, having for their object the removal of preferences.
At the tea sales at Calcutta the offerings generally were of a useful quality. Demand for better qualities was strong, and late rates were fully maintained. Inferior sorts were irregular. Prices ranged from eleven annas six pice to fifteen annas.
In connection with the press reports of outrages against Japanese in California in retaliation for the alleged maltreatment of Americans in Japan, a meeting of the American Association in Yokohama carried a resolution declaring it was in a position to deny any maltreatment of Americans, and urging that the widest publicity be given to that fact in America.
