PRESBYTERY OF WANGANUI
The bi-monthly meeting of the Presbytery was held in St. Andrew’s Hall, Marton, on Tuesday. Bev. T. Miller, moderator, occupied the chair. Bev. J. Johnston, Gonville, was welcomed by the moderator on taking his seat for the first time.
It was agreed that the summer School of Theology be held in Wanganui this year, rod a committee of the Wanganui ministers and their Presbytery ciders was appointed to carry out arrangements. On the motion of Bev. J. Wilson, the Presbytery unanimously passed a resolution expressing indignation and regret that a movement had been instituted to secure the introduction of liquor licenses into the King Country, and calling upon Government not to entertain a proposal which means the final repudiation of the sacred pledge given to the Maoris that intoxicating liquors would not be permitted in the King Country. The Presbytery also urged upon Government to sec that the law i dating to the introduction cf liquor into the King Country is strictly enforced.
On the motion of Bev. Mclvor the Presbytery also protested against increased totalisator permits which mean increased facilities in gambling. Bev. C. A. Kennedy moved that petitions similar to that prepared by the Christchurch Ministers’ be adopted and businessmen’s signatures be obtazDed. Arrangements were made for the triennial visitation of certain congregations, including St. Paul’s, Wanganui, G-'nviilc, and Fordell. Bev. D. Mclvor also moved a motion prepared by the Foreign. Missions Committee, urging that the Condominium in the New Hebrides be brought to an end and steps be taken to bring the Islands under sole British control. This was agreed to. An itinerary was arranged for Bev G. Buda, Home Mission Superintendent, who is shortly to visit the congregations of the Presbytery. A petition was rece.ved from the minister and office-bearers of Foxton, requesting that the outstations be disjoined and formed into a separate charge. A commission of Presbytery was appointed to deal with the application and report to next meeting of Presbytery. The plans of a new church to be built at Westmere were submitted by Bev. W. McNeur and approved.
