SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS
GENERAL SMUTS’ CONFIDENCE. CAPETOWN, June 8. General Smuts has concluded his political tour of all provinces. He says that the prospects for the South African Party at the elections are excellent. He claims that the people have now realised the significance of. the pact between the Nationalists and the Labour Party, and there has been a great swing round of feeling on that account. He predicts that the people will decisively reject the pact. HUNTING ADVENTURE. CAPETOWN, June 8. The Governor-General, Earl of Athlone and Princess Alice had an exciting adventure in the Messina district, in Transvaal. With one attendant, the GovernorGeneral wounded a wildbeeste bull, which charged straight at the party. The Earl of Athlone and the attendant fired when the animal was thirtyyards away, and fortunately killed it.
