RAETIHI NOTES.

GOLF. (From Our Own Correspondent). The local course' is now in good order and golf in Raetihi this year has become more popular than ever. A large number of players were on the links during last week, but the scores were nothing in the nature of record rounds. At times some of the players did excellent driving and approaching, but usually fell away when it came to the putting—the greens being very difficult. Most of them are on an incline. During the weekend a men’s flag match was played, and a fair number of players entered. This was won by Mr R. Jennings, who succeeded in getting 145 yards off the last green with his 92nd stroke. Par for the course is 68 strokes. The putting competition was finally decided, and the winner was Mrs. Jennings, with 8 putts—2 from each corner of the green. FOOTBALL. On Saturday the Raetihi Club’s team journeyed to Rangataua and there defeated the local team by 6 points to 5. Tho best game witnessed in Raetihi this season was played on the show ground on Saturday between United and Ohakune. There was a fair breeze blowing, and Ohakune, getting the advantage, made use of it. They started a lively rush and soon had the champions hard pressed, the result being a score. The kick failed. Shortly afterwards, Summers crossed tho United line, and Annison landed a nice goal. The score was now 8 to nil. Towards the end of the first quarter Ohakune got a free-kick, and added another three points. The only score in this quarter was a try by Bryne for Uunited. and a goal from the field by Keogh, for Ohakune. The score at half time was: Ohakune 15, United 3.

In the next spell United scored between the posts, and Byrne converted United were now making things lively, and their training was standing to them. Another try was registered, and Byrne landed another gaol. This made the scoAc: United 13. Ohakune 15. With only a few minutes to go, there was some dispute over time, and eventually extra time was allowed and it was during this that United scored their last try, and won the game. Tho final score was United 16, Ohakune 15.
