FARMERS’ UNION

BRUNSWICK BRANCH. The Brunswick branch of the Farmers’ Union met on Saturday evening. Air. T. Currie presided. SHOOTING CUP. The chairman stated that the rifle shooting cup which had been presented by the Provincial Executive for branch competition, had been won three times in succession by Brunswick, and was now the property of the branch. It was advisable that the branch should consider what should be done with the trophy.

Mr. Norman Cave stated that he had communicated with Mr. Kitto, who was a member of the rifle team, who had suggested that the cup should be handed back to the Farmers’ Union, [as a challenge cup. He (Mr. Cave) (approved of that idea, and suggested 'that the names of those members who had shot each year should be engraved on suitable shields to be attached to the cup. Mr. Currie supported the suggestion. He said that the cup was a very valuable one, and it was a good idea to engrave on it the names of the members of the teams. It might be possible to call the trophy “The Brunswick Challenge Cup.” Mr. G. Crawley said that he had | hoped to see more of the shooting men present. Some had suggested that the cup might be retained in the branch to be given to the highest scorer each year. However, as no other proposal had been put forward, he was quite in favour of supporting Mr. Kitto's suggestion.

It was finally resolved that the cup be offered to the Provincial Executive, as the “Brunswick Challenge Cup,” fqr competition among branch teams. A ’Stipulation was made to the effect that if the Provincial Executive went out of existence, the cup should be returned to the branch. It was also decided that the competition be fired by the short service rifle, and that the names of the members of the. Brunswick teams be engraved on shields fastened to the ebony base of the cup.

ROOT CRCP GROWING. The chairman reported that Messrs Smith and Strachan and he had been round the district interviewing members with regard to the judging of the root crops. Air. Deem was coming to Brunswick on Monday to do the judging. It was pleasing to be able to report that the entries this year were slightly more in number than those dealt with last year. SUGGESTED RIFLE CLUB. Air. J. G. Campbell stated that he had thought of suggesting that a rifle club should be formed at Brunswick. Since discussing the matter with other members, however, he understood that most of the Brunswick followers of the sport had joined up with Kai Iwi. Even so, it might be worth while forming a local club and using Kai Iwi as a centre.

Air. Crawley said that the Kai Iwi club intended going on. The Department had held them up to a certain extent. Air. J. Crawley urged the formation of a miniature rifle club. It was finally decided to ask Air. J. Crawley to make enquiries regarding a suitable site for a miniature range and report to next meeting.
