EGMONT MEETING CONCLUDES

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

A large attendance was recorded at the con rinding day’s racing •f the Egmont Racing Club’s Winter meeting at Hawera yesterday. The weather remained fine but cold after heavy early morning rafn. The racing was again good, and altogether the meeting *nst W classed as one of the many successes scored by the club.

SIR ROSEBERY’S STEEPLECHASE

INCOME AND HIPO SCORE. TOTALISATOR INCREASE OF £83654. <By “Early Bird.”) The going was very heavy yesterday at Hawera, but that did not prevent some very keen racing. Fields were of average dimensions. Yesterday the R totalisator put through £21,103, as against £17,001 for the second day of the last winter meeting. The total for the two days was £44,229. compared with £35,8634 last year, making an in- - crease of £83651. THE GREY WINS AGAIN Claiming the allowance for her apprentice rider, the grey marc Rehutai was a good favourite for the Ngamutu Hack, Sunny Vale, Puketoi and Sensi- . ble also coming in for a fair share of support. When they were let go Sunny Vale’s rider got caught in the tapes and lost three ot four lengths. Puketoi, on the rails, was first to show out, being followed along the back stretch by Mountain Ore, Carnbee and Arsene Lupin. Crossing the top the favourite made a forward move, and at the turn into the straight Puketoi still had charge from Mountain Ore, with Rehutai handy and Arsene Lupin and Archeen next. The favourite was too good for Puketoi in the run home, a good race resulting in ■ a verdict for Rehutai by half a length. Mountain Ore was a length and a half away third, with Arsene Lupin, Ar- . chcen and Sensible next to finish. MANGAWHERO IMPROVES. > The defection of First Born left a field of eight moderates to contest the Manawapou Hurdles. Savoury, The Curragh, Captain Sarto. Silk Rein, and Mangawhero were backed in that order. From the jump out the lastnamed at once went to the front, to ‘ be joined by Eonmark at the firstfence. Mangawhero still had charge coming up the straight, Eonmark, Captain Sarto, Silk Rein, and Savoury following, with The Curragh and White Ranger last. Alteration lost his rider at the second hurdle in the straight. At the six furlongs the field began to bunch, but they once more began to string out. Mangawhero and Captain Sarto were together ahead of Savoury as they came into the straight, with Silk Rein next. The two leaders took the last fence together, but Mangawhero, who had jumped every fence well, had too much pace on the flat for - the Captain, and beat him by two and a half lengths. Savoury was half a length away third, and Silk Rein fourth. Eonmark, a long way back, was at the head of the remainder. The Curragh never threatened danger. y SIR ROSEBERY’S STEEPLES. A baker ’s dozen contested the Opeke Steeplechase. Te Mai re was the actual favourite, with even support being accorded Sir Rosebery, Lark Hall, Tuki, Starland and Passin’ Through. Kaforte I stood on the mark and lost a dozen r lengths. Sir Rosebery acted as pace- • maker over the early part from San i Forte, Passin’ Through and Te Maire, and this was the order of the leaders going out of the straight the first time, with Starland and Tuki handy. Six furlongs from home Sir Rosebery still had charge, Starland, Te Maire and San Forte following. At the third fence from home the favourite out jumped Sir Rosebery and took the lead, but the latter again went ahead and was first into the straight. Safely over the last fence, where Te Maire blundered, Sir Rosebery held off challenge by Passin’ Through to win by four lengths. San Forte was three lengths away third, a similar distance in front of Te Maire. Then at intervals camo Tuki, Polthogue, Kaforte and Sly Wink. Lark Hall feli*at the second fence, Peneton lost his rider at the brush at the bottom of the straight, Aotea Roa at the first Jtirush on the second round, and Starland at the post and rails when running second five furlongs from home. Te Toa pulled up. HIPO WINS NICELY i There were eight runners in the Mokoia Handicap. Civility was a big favourite in the early operations on the machine, but at elosing time Hipo earned that position, carrying £37 more than the Wanganui filly, this pair having over half the machine. Avola was the only other to come in for serious consideration. When they were sent away Avola had the slightest advantage over a bunch, and when they settled down Avola was clear of Awake. Civility, Hori and Hipo, with Peter Maxwell last. Avola led into the straight ffom Peter Maxwell, Hipo, Awake and Civility. The last-named was the first beaten in the straight. At the distance Hipo was in the van and was then called on to shake off Peter Maxwell’s challenge, the topweight, ridden out, eventually disposing of the outsider by a clear length. Avola was a couple of lengths away

third, with Awake, Civility and Hori next to finish. Hipo gave better than even money as his return, and Peter Maxwell was paying about a quarter of a century for a win. THE LAMB MAKES AMENDS. Fourteen lined up for The Shorts, including Mountain Ore and Disappointment, both of whom had been seen out earlier in the day. The Lamb, with Gray in the saddle, was the elect of backers, thg Lord Multifid gelding carrying nearly twice as much as Royal Blue, Papaponga and a stable mate in Blue Peter. At the start Marquette and Wild Woodbine were slow to find their feet. The Lamb and Royal Bonus made play together over the first bit from Midnight Camp and Wee Sandy. At the home turn The Lamb was out clear, and won comfortably by a length and a half from the fast-finishing Loved One, with Midnight Camp a length away third, and Blue Peter. Red Comet, Disappointment and Mountain Ore next. INCOME’S HANDICAP There was a lot of money for Martian Miss in the Davidson Handicap, the Kemball representative carrying £230 more than Sir Burnett, Income being a fair third choice. Then in the betting came Irapuka, Ecuador, and Snatcher. Going out of the straight Ecudor showed the way to Martian Miss, Irapuka, Income and Skylight. Along the back stretch Ecuador still had command from the favourite, with Fleeting and Peter Maxwell next; Euchre and L’Amour being last. Martian Miss had its head in front of Ecuador and Peter Maxwell as they came into the straight, with Income going well behind the trio. Ecuador was the first to give way, and then Peter Maxwell had Martian Miss beaten when Income came with a good run on the outside and beat the outsider in a good finish by a head. Martian Miss was two lengths away in third berth, and Sir Burnett and Ecuador next. The remainder were' some lengths awa/, Irapuka being at their head. Income completed the hat trick for H. Gray. GRAY’S FOUR ON END. Numerous scratchings in the Borough Handicap reduced the field to seven. Yoma, heavily bandaged in front, was sorted out by the punters as likely to give Gray his fourth win. How right they were was proved at the conclusion. Sir Pam and Interest were also heavily backed. At the start Miss Mickey and Gold Peak were left* some lengths. Yoma, Interest, Carnbee and Sir Pam was the order entering the back straight, and at the five-furlong peg Otapawa had gone to the front from Yoma and Sir Pam. The favourite was showing in the van at the bottom of the straight, and drawing away in the run home won easily by three lengths, with Carnbee a head in front of Sir Pam. Miss Mickey was close up fourth and Interest fifth. INQUIRIES. The rider of Whetunui in the Tawhiti Hack the first day, A. Tinker, was severely cautioned for crossing the field going out of the straight. The apprentice, G. Ridgway, who had the mount on Lupass in the Ngamutu Hack yesterday, was suspended for a month for crossing. FULL DETAILS NGAMUTU HACK HANDICAP.
