U.S. PROHIBITION LAWS

TROUBLE AT CHURCH CONVENTION. SUPPORT EVENTUALLY' SECURED. Received Mav 8. 10.20 p.m. NEW YORK. May 7. According to a telegram from Philadelphia. a Convention of the Protestant Episcopal diocese in Pennsylvania, after revealing marked insurgency, adopted a resolution calling for obedience in support of the Prohibition question, which, during the past twentyfour hours, had threatened to disrupt the tranquility of proceedings. The trouble arose when a dozen delegates presented a counter-proposal stating that Prohibition enforcement was inefficient, corrupt and unpopular, as a result of which the law should be repealed. A violent debate ensued. Amid disorder and dissension, one delegate, seeking to avoid controversy, suggested that the resolution be tabled, since the church did not require to declare itself on the question, but the insurgent minority meantime gained enough adherents to force a vote, and a measure approving Prohibition was adopted by 162 to 64, thus revealing that over 400 delegates failed to vote. —Aus.N.Z.
