POULTRY AND ROOT SHOW

TO BE HELD THIS WINTER. A deputation from the Wanganui Poultry Association, consisting of Messrs J. Patterson and C. W. Gaze, waited upon yesterday’s meeting of the Farmers’ Provincial Executive, for the purpose of soliciting assistance in the conduct of a Winter Show in Wanganui. Mr. Patterson, in outlining the proposal, said that the Poultry Association was endeavouring to organise a Winter Show in Wanganui, and it wished to know if the Union would assist it in the matter. It intended to hold a root competition, in conjunction with the proposed fixture, and in this connection the farmers could render valuable assistance. Tho Agricultural Association had offered to allow the use of their buildings.

Mr. Gaze pointed out that as an Association they thought something should be done to run a Winter J?how in Wanganui. He explained that places smaller than Wanganui could conduct such a show, and his Association was fully of the opinion that something along lines already suggested by Mr. Patterson could be arranged locally in order to interest tho public in what the farming fraternity were doing. He believed that, with the assistance of the farmers, the association could arrange a root competition at the show, which would be held on July 17 and 18—two very suitable days. Mr. James Grant, late Agricultural instructor at tho Technical College, and Mr. Deem, had offered to assist in the matter of a show. What the association wanted the Union to do was to get its members interested in the matter. The speaker outlined what was being done in Palmerston North in connection with root competitions. Ho said that the Association proposed to confine itself to roots and poultry this year. The chairman (Mr. C. Smith) said he though they could get three schools interested in the matter of root competitions.

Mr. Gaze said that possibly they would not get the Education Department’s sympathy in the matter, but no doubt they could do all right apart from that.

The chairman considered that they should support the Poultry Association in its movement, and give it financial assistance in regard to the root competitions, if possible. He was of the opinion that it was the Agricultural Association’s place to take up the matter of a Winter Show, but probably at the present time it could not do anything. Mr. Gaze said that Wanganui was a bit behind the times in the matter of a winter show, and they had desired the Agricultural Association to take the matter up. Mr. Patterson pointed out that he had convassed the town for an hour in connection with the fixture and had received £l2 10s.

Mr. Howie remarked that the question of a Winter Show -should have been raised some months ago, in order to give the farmers an opportunity to prepare their exhibits. It was considered that there would be sufficient competition for a good root show, and it was resolved that the executive assist the Poultry Association in the matter in any way possible. The question of giving financial assistance was referred to the committee.
