HOCKEY

The opening of the 1924 season brings forth, renewed vigour and enthusiasm amongst its many support; ers. It is pleasing indeed to hear of three new clubs, Wesley, St. Andrew’s and Tiki taking the field, and the standard of play as shown by last seasons games will no doubt be outdone. Although up against older and more experienced players as are found in Phoenix, Kai Toa, and Hinemoa, we wish the new clubs every success. The representative eleven to be chocsen later will have to put in some hard practice, to bring the new cup, presented to the Feilding Association, 'to Wanganui. This cup is to be held by the winner of challenge matches between Feilding, Taihape, and Wa.nganui, Wairarapa and Taranaki being considered opponents. It is; with regret that we hear of the disqualification of the Halcombe Hockey Club, as these things tend to destroy the game, and not build it up as it should be. But we sincerely hope the Feilding Association will look upon the Halcombe Club a little more leniently, and that the Halcombe “boys” will get going and enlist new members, as has been done by the success shown by the new clubs in Wanganui, and boost their club to victory.

The Tiki Club held their annual meeting last night and it was very encouraging indeed to those who have worked so hard the last few months to get together members sufficient to put in a first-class team. The club has been unfortunate enough to lose C. Galpin and L. Wylie who have left town, but have replaced them by M. Bason, of Palmerston North, and W. Kenning, of Nelson, who have representative honours. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs Breed, Warnock and Kenning. It was decided to have a practice game on Saturday at Gonville Park, and members of all clubs can be assured of a game.
