WATERSIDERS’ PICNIC
CHARGED WITH BREACH OF AWARD. (P»r Press Association.'' CHRISTCHURCH, March 26. At Lyttelton to-day, the Labour Department proceeded against the Waterside Union for £lOO, as a penalty for an alleged breach of award in causing a general stoppage of work for the purpose of holding a picnic on a day other than that provided in the award. .The facts were that the day set aside for the picnic was wet, and the owflng was held a few days later, and no response was made to calls for labour on that djy. The defence contended that the Union, as a corporate body, had not done anything to make it guilty of creating a stoppage. Whatever charge might be laid against individual members of the Union, there was no case against the Union. The Magistrate, Mr. Widdowson, reserved decision.
