UNPOPULAR DECISION » STONE V. UREN. LATTER GETS VERDICT: CROWD PROTESTS VIGOROUSLY. “Ladies and gentlemen, I thank you very much for the reception you gave me when I entered the ring, and when the fight was over. I can see after tonight that I cannot win a fight in Wellington.” Thus yesterday's N.Z. Times. The 400 U who saw Havilah Uren get the decision over Harry Stone at the Town Hall on Monday night hooted the verdict and loudly applauded the above remarks which were made by the loser at the close of the contest. It was evident that the crowdpdid not think the same ways as Messi’s P. W. Woods and J. E. Staples, who acted as judges. It was the multitude against two. DISAPPOINTING CONTEST. The fight itself was disappointing. Uren, who is a southpaw, was puzzled by Stone's unorthodox methods, and never took any risks. His leads seldom got home and in the majority of cases his straight right connected with Stone's back. Neither did he seem to move well on his feet, and was at times hampered by an abnormal crouch. Stone seldom carried the fight to his opponent, and as the latter adopted the same tactics the encounter was rather monotonous. There were very few long range exchanges, and clinches predominated. Stone showed that he has a marvellous defence, and is quick to seize an opening. On several occasions he sprang at his opponent and his both hands worked like piston rods on Uren's body. Uren was the first to enter the ring and seemed to be in splendid condition. ►Stone followed, wearing a skull cap and a bib. When they stood side by side their builds were a striking contrast. Uren was stocky and very muscular about the thighs and legs, while Stone was small below the hips, but very big round the chest and shoulders. Harry Stone turned the scales at 9st 131 b, while Uren was 9st 101 b.
