ATTEMPTED GAOL BREAKING
MELBOURNE CONSPIRACY CASE. Received March 25, 10.45 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 24. At the trial of Arms, Costello, Toolan, Leslie Taylor and Thomas Taylor on a charge of conspiring to assist Angus Murray (convicted-of the murder of a bank manager) to escape from the Melbourne gaol, evidence was given as to the finding of a grappling hook with a line made of roller towels, also other preparations for escape in one of the yards. Gleeson gave further details of offers of money made to warders, including himself, by Leslie Taylor. Taylor gave pound notes sometimes to secure daily papers. Once he wrote on the asphalt “Will you a pound note for today’s papers.” Gleeson ignored this. He did not report these instances. Asked why he did not report, and if he did not think it wrong for warders to receive offers of money from prisoners, he said he did not know much about it. He had no reason to report, though when Costello offered him £lO to change shifts he thought it suspicous.
