A few minutes before the steamer frekevc left Wellington for Lyttelton, two firemen—Lucian Cruno, a Chilian, and Alfred de Castro, a Portugese—came aboard under the influence of liquer and ydered Rafael Cruz, a Costa Rican, to icteh dinner to them. He refused to comply with the request, whereupon Cruno drew a razor and gashed him in the stomach, while De Castro stabbed him in the back with a knife. He had to be taken to hospital, where he was detained three days for treatment. At Lyttelton, at the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, the pair were charged with unlawful assault, and were each fined £4 or a month’s imprisonment.
