MR HOPE GIBBONS INSTALLED WELCOMED BY COUNCILLORS The installation of Mr Hope Gil» bons as Mayor of Wanganui took place at the Borough Chambers Inst evening. The Mayor-elect was welcomed by Cr. J. C. Richardson, who expressed the hope that he would have a busy and profitable term. After the declaration was read, by the Town Clerk, the Mayor-elect attached his signature. A letter was received from Mr T. B. Williams, offering his congratulations. All the councillors present in turn extended their congratulations to the Mayor. The Mayor returned thanks for congratulations and promises of support. The policy put forward by him had been endorsed by an overwhelming vote. Ho intended to push that policy, but if they did not help him he would not be able to give effect to it. He asked for a fair run, and he wanted them to help him to push tho town on. Proceeding, the Mayor said he had already expressed his views in regard to the staff, and considered that out of Greater Wanganui they should get one good staff. He hoped there would be no underground engineering, that everything would be fair and square, and that if councillors had anything to say they would say it openly. There was not the' slightest doubt that it was an honour to occupy the Mayoral chair for the inauguration of Greater Wanganui, but ho was nqt there for the sake of honour: He was there because he thought that he could do Wanganui some good. Ho would not be frightened to accept responsibility, and he would always be prepared to give a lead. Personally, he liked people with initiative. He wished to see Wanganui greatly improved from a civic and comfort point Of view. Ho wanted to see the community well housed, and, if he might put it that way, well drained, well watered and with all the facilities that made for a progressive community. He wanted to promote co-operation and good fellowship between themselves, and he proposed to give a Mayoral banquet. (Applause). It was to celebrate. tho inauguration of Greater Wanganui. In conclusion, the Mayor again thanked the councillors for the cordial welcome extended to him.
