SPORTS AT NELSON. (Per Press Association.) NELSON, March 23.' Nelson motor cycle races were held yesterday at Richmond Park in fine weather. Thre was a huge attendance. Results:— Novice (five laps).—Grant 1, De Bailleux 2, Freeman 3. Time: 7.3. (A lap is nine furlongs). Wakefield Handicap (six laps).— Woodman 1, Sweeney 2, Stratton 3. Time: 6.47 2-5. Richmond Park Handicap (8 laps).— Coleman 1, Stratton 2, Donaldson 3. Time: 7.44 2-5. Nelson Handicap (12 laps).—Elliott 1, Coleman 2, Stratton 3. Time: 16.21 4-5. Coleman’s time was 13.1 4-5. Motueka Handicap (6 laps).—Webby 1, Sussex 2, Sweeney 3. Time: 7.57 2-5. President’s Handicap (10 laps).— ’ Clark 1, Stratton 2, Coleman 3. Time: 13.30. Consolation Race.—Everett 1, Freeman 2, Stratton 3. In an unsuccessful attempt to lower his own record, Coleman did a mile in 49 2-5 secs. AN AUSTRALASIAN RECORD. .AUCKLAND, March 24. At the Muriwai motor races an Australasian five-mile speed record was established with a flying start by S. Andrews on a Ford, 3min. 29soc; S. Do Beer (Austin), 3.30; H. Wittrass (Mercer), 3.34 4-5; B. Campbell (Essex), 3.42 2-5; and J. Seabrook (JeWett), 4.0 3-5. Both the Austin and the Mercer made a second attempt on the record, but failed to lower the Ford’s figure. The Ford’s time works out at 86.1 miles per hour. This performance established for the first time an Australasian record for the five-mile distance on a straight track.
