A PLOT THAT FAILED
MELBOURNE GAOL BREAKING PLOTTERS’ PLANS DIVULGED. Beeeived March 24 8.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 24. There has commenced the trial of five men—Arms, Costello, Toolan, Leslie Taylor and Thomas Taylor—on a charge of conspiring to assist Angus Murray to escape from Melbourne gal. A witness, named Gleeson, an employee at the gaol, gave evidence as to Cosfello, who was a fellow warder, offering him money if he would go off sick to enable the plot to be carried out. Toolan also made an offer of another job and a cut out of £-250 when the job was finished. Plans for effecting the escape were shown to him.
