THE MAYORALTY

MR HOPE GIBBONS' CANDIDATtJREr ’ MEETING OF SUPPORTERS TO MORROW EVENING. Active steps are being taken by a strong committee to secure the return of Mr. Hope Gibbons who has been nominated for the Mayoralty, and a meeting will be held at Dustin’s rooms to-morrow evening. Replying to the deputation which waited upon him Mr. Gibbons said that he had no personal ambitions to occupying the position of Mayor, but he felt that it was the duty of all who had lived for a long time in the town, and had been successful in business, to place their services at the disposal of the community, and he looked upon it as his duty now to do so. Ho acknowledged the compliment paid to him by the presence of the deputation, also by the fact that the Ratepayers’ Association had selected him as a candidate. Proceeding, he went on to say that not even the greatest optimist would say that Wanganui was a happy community from a civic point of view or that it had been so for several years. He did not think that there was enough co-operation between the various municipal departments themselves and between them and the Borough Council, and without this co-operation it was not possible for the affairs of the town to prosper, and be as happy as they should be. Without*being egotistical, ho believed that he had the ability to bring about a much happier state of affairs than were existing at present. His hearers would remember that he had for long interested himself in matters pertaining to the civic welfare of the people, such as parks and reserves, good housing, roads and streets. He assured the deputation that if he were elected he would do his best to promote the best interests and the welfare of tho town. After discussing various matters, those present formed themselves into a committee to secure Mr. Gib,bons’ return, and Mr. J. Siddells was elected secretary.
