FIRST REPRESENTATIVE MATCH WANGANUI V. TARANAKI. LOCAL TEAM CHOSEN. SHOULD PROVE A VERY STRONG COMBINATION. The Wanganui Rugby Union selectors, Messrs A. Takarangi, C. Stewart and Dr. Adams, met on Saturday night and selected the Wanganui team to represent the Union in the first big match of the season. This is the fixture with Taranaki representatives, which, in accordance with the practice prevailing for several years, will be played on Cook’s Gardens next .Monday. June 4th. the day on which the King’s Birthday is this year being celebrated. The team is as follows. (Note: K. represents Kaierau Club, 0.8. for Old Boys, P. for Pirates, R. for Rata, and T. for Taihape): Full-back: Darby’ (K). Three-quarters: Roberts (T), Potaka (R), Hartley (R). Five-eighths: Peina (R), B. Delves (B). Half-back: Baddeley (O.B.) Wing-forward: Bellis (T), Capt. Forwards: Hookers: O'Connell (T), Aamodt (I>) W. Ross (K), Dillon (K), Packer (O.B.) Cox (O.B.), Harre (R). Reserve Backs: R, Collier (T), McAuliffe (M). Reserve Forwards: Anderson (P), Bolton (K). Since the above team was chosen it has been learned that Hartley was injured on Saturday and may not play again this season. R. Collier will no doubt fill the vacancy. It is doubtful whether a stronger team has ever been picked for this usually early-in-the-season match, and with all of this week devoted to practice and strict training, they should be capable of again defeating Taranaki. It is interesting to note that the team as above is practically the same as that which was forecasted in our Saturday morning notes, the only difference being the placing of Aamodt for J. Stewart in the front rank of the scrum. The Pirate hooker played a nice game on Saturday afternoon, and he undoubtedly earned his place. The Wanganui representatives will be donning the Union’s new jerseys (all royal blue with black monogram). and they should certainly do them credit. The local team are fast in the forwards, while if the backs get the chance they should give a thriling display of Rugby. THE TARANAKI TEAM. (Special to “Chronicle,") Full-back: Coutts. Three-quarters: Hart, Johnson. Woods. Five-eighths: Cameron, G. McLean. Half-back: Greaves. Wing-forward: Taylor. Forwards: Kerrisk, Kivell, West, Spratt, Hammersley, Campbell, Wylie, -Aramoho and Queen's Park Old Boys’ Clubs are reminded of training practice on the Rec. at 7.30 on Tuesday night. RANGITIKEI SUB-UNION GAMES TOKORANGI 3 v. RATA 0. There was a big crowd at Halcombe to witness the Senior Cup match between the above teams. The ground was in a deplorable state owing to the wet weather. Nevertheless, the game throughout was keen and interesting. The nippy Rata chaps never got a look in. Frequent changes of long kicks taking place in mid-field. Just upon uihe call of half-time Anderson took advantage of a speculator of one of Bata’s backs and crossed the line for lokorangi, being the only score in the match. Bata had an opportunity to equalise scores in the second spell by a penalty under the goat posts, but the ball went wide. During the game George Hartley had two bones in his tfrist broken, and is hardly likely to play again this season. Considering the state of the ground it was one of the best exhibitions of Rugby seen in the district for many a dav. Mr A. Hunt refereed. HUNTERVILLE 11 v. BULLS 0. At Hunterville the local team defeated Bulls by 3 tries, one of which was converted. Mr A. Gordon refereed TURAKINA 32 v. MARTON 0. At Marton the match between the above teams resulted in an easy win for Turakina. D. Cameron, who is one of the best five-eighths in the district, was responsible for most of the points scored, and his smart, and at times, sensational play, was a treat to witness. Mr A. Nicholson refereed. Saturday’s matches were the end of the matches for the first round of the competition, and Rata and Tokorangi are equal with four wins each. THE GLENN CUP. The first representative match of the season will be played on Saturday next at Marton, between teams representing the Northern and Southern sections of the Rangitikei Union. The northern team will be chosen from the Turakina, Hunterville and Rata teams, the southern from Marton, Bulls and lokorangi.

ASSOCIATION. SATURDAY'S GAMES. Y.M.C.A. 0 V. WORKSHOPS 4. This match, played at Victoria Park under good football conditions, created great interest among the followers of Soccer, as was evinced by the large number present. From the kick-off ’Shops took up the. running and McGorrom making a big clearance, Richards pounced on the ball, and although hampered by the backs went on to score a fine goal from close in, three minutes from the start. This early success seemed to stimulate the 'Shops to further efforts, and having forced a corner. Carter, the Y.M. custodian, cleared in fine style. Taylor, the Y.M.C.A. captain in an effort to stem the ’Shops onslaught, was here injured in a collision and had to retire. Things looked black for the maroons, but they took up the running. Stevens clearing his lines in fine style. Mackley on the left was putting in some good midfield work, but much of his work was spoiled by off-side, the ball coming again to Richards he again made tracks for goal, and shooting on the run, sgpred from 15 yards, Carter failing to field. 'Shops were then 2 up after sixteen minutes' play. Continuing to press. Cooper found a corner which was well placed and equally well saved by Carter. At this stage Taylor returned with his head heavily bandaged. Curtis at left back tor Y.M. seemed out of position, and was very genky in his clearances. Carter saved w’ell from Mackley in a melee. A foul against McGorram looked dangerous, but was cleared. Stoddart on the Y.M. left made many attempts to pass McGorram, but was not equal to the occasion. the elder Scot having the whiphand. Thirty-five minutes passed before the ’Shops goalie handled the ball, and then from a back pass from McGorram. Cooper made a good run down the wing and forced a corner which he placed well and McDougall did the necesary with his head and ’Shops were 3 up in 40 minutes. At the other end Dorrance with only the goalie to beat shot at him and missed a good chance. Y.M. were, having more of the game now and shots by Bastings and Kitchen were well saved. Half-time: Shops 3, Y.M.C.A. Resuming. ’Shops played Mackley inside to Cooper. Raine playing on the left with McDougall inside, It transpired that this combination was not so effective. Bastings had been unusually subdued Thanks to Healey, but got past and Dorrance put into the net only to have it disallowed, the whistle having gone for a minor injury to a player. Hard luck, Y.M.C.A. McGorram fouled Dorrance in the area and from the resulting penalty the ball hit the bar and was cleared. Y.M. were having all the play now and Winstanley was active on many occasions. 'Shops now exerted themselves and the pace was a corker, up and down the ball travelled, each goalie saving finely. Bastings, with a fine long shot, again got the ball in the net for Y.M., but an infringement nullified same. Carter pushed away a shot from Cooper and kicked away from Richards. In the semi-darkness Healey came through from full-back and scored: Shops 4, Y.M.C.A. 0. For the ’Shops McGorram, Richards and Winstanley were the chief factors in a well-merited victory, and Y.M.C.A. were best served by Carter and Taylor. Y.M.C.A.—Carter. Allan. Curtie, Richie, Taylor (capt.), Fife, Bastings, Kitchen, Dorrance, Richie, Stoddart. 'Shops. McGorram, Healey, Stevens. Fairhurst, Hampton, Cooper. McDougall, Richards (capt.), Raine, Mackley. Referee, Mr. Horricks.
