ANZAC NAVY
MB. WM. HUGHES’ OPINION SYDNEY, May 19. Mr Hughes, commenting on the Telegraph’s leader on the Anzac Navy, said that the problem must be approached from an Empire viewpoint, though there was nothing in the Washington agreement to prevent the construction of smaller craft by localities for their own defence. He ridiculed the suggestion to utilise Sydney as a naval base, adding that a glance at the map showed that Singapore should be the base for guarding the Pacific.
