MAKURA QUARANTINED

TWO CASAS OF MILD - SMALLPOX The Makura, from Vancouver, with 100 passengers for Auckland and 50 for Sydney, was quarantined on arrival at Auckland yesterday, owing to the discovery that two children are suffering from a i mild form of small-pox—-the Port Health Officer says it is more like chicken pox. TJne passengers will be vaccinated to-day and landed at Motuihi Island. A big mail from England and America will be fumigated and landed to-day. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 17. An outbreak of alastrim (a nJJd form of smallpox) confined to two children on board the Makura, produced an unexpected development when the vessel anchored in the stream at 1.30 p.m. on arrival from Vancouver. Following medical examination, and, as a precautionary measure, th© port health officer (Dr. Sharman) gave instructions for the steamer to proceed to Motuihi quarantine station to-morrow morning. Hie two patients are third-class male passengers, aged about 12 and 13 respectively. They joined the steamer at Vancouver, bound for Wellington. The first was confined to bed last Saturday j about the time th© ship reached Suva, and both were isolated by the ship’s doctor. The Makura had 100 passengers for Auckland and 50 for Sydney, also 6(0 bags of English and American mails for the Dominion, and a quantity of cargo for Auckland. The mails nave not been landed pending instructions from Wellington. The two patients remain on the ship under the oare of the ship’s doctor. LATER PARTICULARS AUCKLAND, May 17. The Makura’s patients and pas-' sengers will land at the quarantine station after vaccination to-morrow. The cargo and mails will be fumigated, and mails will be landed tomorrow. After landing passengers, the ship will be disinfected. It is probable that the Sydney passengers, numbering 50, will then roturn on board the vessel and proceed in quarantine to Sydney. The period of quarantine for the 10-0 Auckland passengers will be considered by the Chief Health Officer. The Port Health Officer says the complaint is nearer chicken pox than small pox.
