FRENCH-CANA DIANS GO TO THE STATES. CATHOLIC PRIESTS’ EFFORTS TO STOP EMIGRATION. Received May 17, 8. 40 p.m. OTTAWA, May 17. The emigration situation in Quebec bas become so serious that the Government has established an office in Montreal, directed by Catholic priests, for the purpose of diaooixraging FrenchCanadians, who comprise three-fourths of the population of the province, from emigrating to the United States. The offee will be informed by parish priests ot any communicants intending to leave the country, and special pressure will be brought to bear on such for the purpose of inducing them to stay.—A'is.N.Z.
