THE SALARIES CUT.

PREMIER EXPLAINS THE POSITION. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 13. During the course of the debate on the Address-in-Heply a good deal was made of the point that the salary cut was uniform over all salaries between £lOO and £BOO. The Premier, in his speech to-night, read the following table, showing exactly how the cut worked out, particularly stressing the fact that those whose salaries were over £3OO paid income tax as well as suffering a reduction through the cut. The reductions worked out as follows: —Up to £l9O, first and second cuts, £l5; £l9l to £320, £25; £321 to £5OO, £3O and income tax £11; £5Ol to £BOO, £35 and income tax £36; £9OO, in one deduction, £63 and income tax £45; £lOOO, £BO and income tax £56; £1250, £ll3 and income tax £B6. An officer over £BOO was reduced in full at one stroke whereas the reductions for those of £BOO and below is provided in three stages, two of which have been made. Even if the third cut is made, an employee at £l9O is exempt therefrom, and he will be reduced no further, but the £8 00 a year man may lose another £lO. This is £45 in all, as compared with £l5 in all for a £l9O employee.
