THE HAWKE CIT. Refering to the Hawke Cup Match between Wanganui and Nelson which will commence at Nelson to-morrow the Nelson Mail says:—lt’ is most unfortunate that the weather is so bad as the Nelson team have been unable to get in some much needed practice. The majority were engaged either in net practice or country games last Saturday, but more is required yet. The Wanganui team is a strong one and is bent on making a very determined assault on the Cup. Only two games have previously been played against Wanganui, but this is their first visit to Nelson. In 1880 Nelson won by flwickets, and the value of this win can be gauged from the fate that in that year Wanganui defeated Murdoch’s Australian XI. In 1910 also, at Wanganui, Nelson had very much the best of a drawn game, scoring 300 (Neale 63, Richmond 59, Louisson 47, Fairey 45) and Wanganui J 74 and 8 for 120. It was in this game, with Allcott and Clark bowling, that Wanganui at one stage batted’ for three-quarters of an hour without scoring a run, the monotony then being broken with a leg bye. None of the present Wanganui team played in that match, and only Max and Neale on the Nelson side, took part in it. It is very interesting to note how Nelson has fared with outside teams in the 60 years of provincial matches. In addition to the following wins and losses, there was a tie with Wellington and 5 drawn games, leaving Nelson with only 25 losses out of 70 matches. The Nelson team is Newman, Haycock, K. Lines, Max, M. Eden, Langbein, A. Giblin, Kemnitz, Fletcher, Blamires, Neale. 12th man: Davies. ST. PAUL’S CLUB. The following will represent the above dub ’n their match against Y.M.C.A. on Saturday next on Victoria Park, No. 2, at 2 p.m. : —Batchelor, Taylor, Deeih, Aiken, Bellamy, McCallum, Harrison (2), Edwards. Simpson a.nd Wahlstrom. Emergencies: Cowan and Cameron.
