THE CLAIMS OF THE ARAWA TRIBE. OUTLINE OF PROPOSED AGREEMENTS. (Per Pres* Association.) WELLINGTON, March 28. Sir Francis Bell has furnished the following outline of the proposed agreement of the claims of the Arawa tribe in respect to the Rotorua district: The Crown admit Arawa rights to ancient fishings and burial reserves in all lakes, and the Arawas admit that the fee simple of the lakes is vested in the Crown. A special board, on the lines of the Rotolti Board, to be appointed to control the surroundings. % The Green Lake (Rotorarahi) and the island to be one of the burial places. The Arawas to have 40 instead of 20 licenses to fish trout in the lakes at a nominal fee. No trading of the indiginous fish of the lakes to be permitted. The Civil List to be amended, adding £4OOO to the present £7OOO for Native purposes, and £6OOO to be paid annually to a board to be established for the purpose of benefit to the Arawa tribe and its various Ha- * pus. The money is to be used to benefit the whole tribe, not individuals. The board may raise money for capital expenditure, and interest for sinking fund to be secured out of annual provisions from the Consolidated Fund. The first payment from the Consolidated Fund to be made not earlier than six months after the end of the session of 1923. The Act to be amended during 1922 for expenditure already incurred in litigation on the lake and other claims. Payment, limited to £2OOO, is proposed to be provided by the Crown in four payments of £5OO a year, the first after the session of 1923.
