UNIVERSITY ATHLETES.

AN EMPIRE PROPOSAL. N.Z. UNIVERSITY SPORTS UNION TO BE FORMED. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 22. When Mr Emery, manager of the Springboks, was in Christchurch, he referred to the project of periodical athletic contests among the universities of the world. The scheme catfle up for consideration at a meeting of the Canterbury College Athletic Club. The secretary of the club said Mr. Emery’s proposals included the sending of a New Zealand, team to South Africa at the end of this year to compete against representatives of the English, Australian, and South African Universities. It was impossible to send a New Zealand team this year, but proposals had been formulated which it was hoped would further the project. These were; (1) A body to be called “The New Zealand University Sports Union;” (2) the body to represent past and present students, with an executive in Wellington; (3) finance to be derived from past and present students for the objects of improving the physical standard in the New Zealand Universities and provide adequate representation at inter-University games. In reply to a question, the secretary said the idea was to start the games among British Empire Universities and eventually extend the scheme to Universities of other countries. A resolution was passed requesting delegates to the Auckland conference at Easter to consider carefully Whether the games should not be restricted to the British Empire.
