HUIA’S TEMPESTUOUS TRIP.
ANXIOUS, TRYING TIME. (Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 22. After an anxious, trying time, through exceptionally heavy weather, the small steamer Hula arrived here, the captain having decided to run for shelter. The vessel usually runs from Onehunga to Port Waikato. The latter was left at 11 on Monday morning with a moderate westerly heavy sea. Manukau Heads was reached in the evening. Terrific seas on the bar prevented crossing. Buffeted severly, Monday night was spent on the coast. There was no improvement in the -weather on Tuesday and the steamer returned to the Waikato bar. That, also, was too dangerous. At midday Captain Jackson decided to run for New Plymouth. The vessel being very short of coal and provisions, sails were set to economise coal. Port was reached at 6.30 this morning with the bunkers practically bare. There was no food except a few biscuits.
