HIGH COMISSIONER’S CABLE. MUTTON AND LAMB DEMAND GOOD AT FIRM PRICES. PRESENT QUOTATIONS. The Department of Aviculture has received the following cablegram, dated March 11th. from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London : MEAT. Stocks of old season's mutton and lamb are small, and with short supplies of new season’s; the demand continues good at firm prices. It is felt, in some quarters, that with the larger immediate arrivals prices may weaken. HEMP. Manila market somewhat easier, but closes steady. March-May shipments U G” grade, quoted at £37 10s per ton (sellers); “ H” grade, £37 per ton; "J” grade. £36 10s per ton (nominal). New Zealand market quiet and inactive. Highpoints offered are: Spot, £34 per ton and March-May shipments quotations at same prices; fair, £32 lOs per ton. These prices are quite nominal, and there are possible buyers at about 40s per ton less. WOOL. Sijhrs continue and with a strong support from Home and foreign sections the bulk of the offerings selling and values show an improvement on the opening; the current rate being not more than par to 5 per cent, below January figures for both merino and crossbred. This week B.A.W.R.A. offerings have consisted of Australian me- ! rino, greasy 5500 bales, scoured 2800 bales, crossbred, greasy, 3900 hales, scoured 2800 bales, crossbred, greasy 3900 bales, scoured 1300 bales. New Zealand crossbred, greasy 3400 bales, scoured 1000 bales, slipe 1150 bales* FRUIT. Heavy arrivals of American and British Columbia boxes of apples have brought about a somewhat lower value, but a steady improvement is looked for from now onwards, and it is anticipated the market will be practically clear by the end of this month. The first shipment of Tasmanian and Australian apples is due on March 18th. Boxes.—American Winesaps, 12s to 15s 6d; Spitz, 14s to 17s; Californian Newtowns, 15s to 16s; Oregon Newtown, 16s to 18s. South African pears are meeting steady inquiry.—Williams, 14in x 28in boxes, 4s to 5s 6d. HONEY. Market very quiet owing to arrival of foreign shipment of particularly good colour, and sales of New Zealand are small at—White, 91s per cwt; light amber, prime, 85s to 90s per cwt. EGGS. A considerable increase in Home supplies, together -with a recent large arrival of imported, has caused a decline in prices. English, 18s to 19s; Irish, 17s to 18s; Banish, 17s to 21s; Dutch, 16s to 20s: Italian, 16s to 17s; Moroccan, 14s; Egyptian. Ils 6d; Sjrian, 15s to- 16s.
