(Per Press Association.} AUCKLAND, Jan. 10. Victor Cartier, aged 12, an inmate of the Leslie Orphanage, slipped from the rocks into the sea while on his way to a bathing place 9 near Mahurangi Heads. The matron, Miss Wright,, made a plucky but ineffectual attempt at rescue, but lost her hold on the lad, w*ho sank. The body was recovered yesterday. A SURFACEMAN’S DEATH. LEVIN, Jan. 10. Robert Melton, aged 33, railway surfaceman, disappeared from home last Monday morning. Search parties were out ali the week, and his body was discovered yesterday hanging to a tree on a farm near the town. Deceased had teen suffering from a nervous breakdown. He leaves a wife and three young children. INQUEST. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 10. An inquest opened yesterday regarding the death of Janies McDonald Dales, an artilleryman, who died on Saturday evening as Hie result of a shot from a revolver. It was stated that deceased, when on active service, was on a ship torpedoed in the English Channel, and since his return had been a little nervous. A medical man who was tailed in said that apparently it was a self-inflicted wound. The inquest was adjourned for further inquiries. Deceased was aged 30, married, and with two children.
