EXCITING EXPERIENCE.
STEAMER LOSES DECK CARGO. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 10. While crossing the North Atlantic from Liverpool to Newport News, the Waiotapu, which arrived at Auckland early this morning, lost the whole of her deck cargo, comprised of phosphorous, sulphuric acid and other chemicals. Shortly after leaving Liverpool heavy seas were encountered, and portion of the deck cargo was w*ashed overboard. In another gale the phosphorus ignited, probably through combustion caused by the seas, and set fire to the remainder of the cargo, which had to be jettisoned No damage was done beyond this, and Newport News was reached without further mishap.
