MARTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, June 12. “Home from the club, he fears the storm.” This does not to the members of the Marton Cosmopolitan Club, the majority of whose members are single men without homes, and in order to provide evening amusement for these members the Billiard Room Committee have inaugurated a series of “Flying Fifty” tournaments, which are proving very popular and interesting. The first took place last month, when Mr F. Howard proved the winner, with Mr J. Curtis as runner-up, the trophies being donated by Mr Walter Oldfield and Mr E. C. Haddock. On Friday evening last the second tournament was held, there being forty-six entrants. Starting at 7 o'clock, the final was played at 11.30, the old veteran player, Mr W. Ward, scoring a very popular win, with Mr R. Knox second. The trophies were donated by Mr F. Howard and the Billiard Room Committee (Messrs A. Hunt, R. Oldfield, F. Stansbury, and R. Upchurch). Mr A. Blair won air F. Howard’s special for the biggest break, “Sandy” fluking a break of 33. Light refreshments were dispensed, and at the conclusion Mr A. Way (treasurer) presented the trophies to the winners, the recipients being greeted with “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Another tournament will be held shortly. At Taihape Town Hall on Friday last Mr Arrowsmith was entertained by thd residents at a farewell social and dinner. The Mayor (Mr A. J. Joblin) presided, and there were about. 150 persons present. Messrs R. W. Smith and W. Glenn, M.’s P., were present. The former, in a eulogistic address dealing with Mr Arrowsmith’s service as a public man lit Taihape, referred to the many public positions the guest had held in the town, and the keen Interest that he had taken in all matters affecting the welfare of the town and district, and on behalf of the residents presented Mr Arrowsmith with a beautiful silver tea and coffee service and silver tray. The proceedings were very enthusiastic throughout, and a number of felicitous speeches testified to the popularity and ability of Mr Arrowsmith. The Rangitikei Motor Club has decided to hold its annual ball in the Marton Town Hall on Thursday, sth August. Crozier’s Orchestra will supply the music. This alone is worth coming to hear. Mr F. L. de Berry, headmaster of the Marton District High School, has received advice from General Sir William Birdwood that if time permits he will visit the Marton School when visiting Marton. The Rangitikei junior representative team will travel to Levin on 26 th June to try conclosions with the Horowhenua junior representatives.
