SOLDIERS' GRIEVANCES.
DEPUTATION TO MR. MASSEY.
(Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 5. A deputation from the Returned Soldiers' Association waited upon Mr Massey and complained that returned soldiers were not being reinstated in the railway service, quoting specific cases. The deputation also represented that land settlement on country estates was not being vigorously pursued, and that several anomalies regarding gratuities should be rectified.
Mr Massey said that Canterbury had done more than any other land district in the settlement of soldiers. The Government had placed four thousand men on country land in the Dominion and two thousand in houses in the cities." Not eventhe British' Government had done as well. The Government never bought at extortionate prices, and the railway matter would be discussed in Wellington. He would also go into the question of gratuities' anomalies.
