TRIBUTE TO MR MASSEY.
£ "A BROAD-MINDED LIBERAL I STATESMAN." I Speaking at Rangiotu Mr E. NewSi man stated that when lie first enter--8 led Parliament in 1008 Mr Massey 8 1 was Leader of the Opposition, and 1! he was elected to support him. Since a I then he had been closely associated § with Mr Massey, and had seen his S transition from Leader of the Oppo--1 sition to Leader of the Government. g 1 And he was bound to say that he jihad greater confidence in him now i | than "ever before. He regarded him I jas a broad-minded liberal statesman, | i keenly anxious to do his* best for New I I Zealand and always willing to learn 1 both sides of a question before de1' cidiag on it. Pie was entirely in syra- § 1 pathv with the legitimate aims of |j sane* Labour, and in him the farming j
community had a firm and faithful friend. Since he first assumed office as Prime Minister he had had a rough time, between strikes in New Zealand and the war, but last session he had proved that, given a reasonable- chance, he was able and prepared to initiate and pass legislation of a most useful nature; and he (Mr Newman) hoped he would be returned at this elo"tion with such a substantial majority as would enable him to administer the affairs of the country with success for a further term.
