Mr D. G. O'Brien, who is opposing Mr Holland in Buller, became a miner at the age of seventeen years, and has been in the industry for about thirty years. He took an active part in the formation of the miners' union at Millerton, and became president. Later he was secretary for several years. He was chairman of the Buller County Council when war was declared. He went to the front with the first body of tunnellers, won a commission in France, and afterwards saw service in Palestine. On his return to New Zealand he resumed work as an underviewer in the Millerton mine.
