HOW TO VOTE.
THE LICENSING ISSUE
AN ADVERTISING COMEDY,
The three Hues, on'the approaching ballot paper for the licensing issue and a diversity qf opinion as to how they should be struck out have resulted iv at least one little comedy in Wanganui. ; ., • ■■;•- •
, The brick wall of a garage in^he Avenue appealed muchly to the local representatives cf the Red''Ribbon' Society aa an admirable display face, and forthwith there was painted on it a representation of striking but the two bottom lines. /
Next door was a churchy who^e adherents, viewed the advertisement with righteous anger. They sat in solemn conclave and passed a resolution \of protest. But some blue ribboiiite1 thought" out a more effective method, and so it came to pass that a small hoarding wa,s erected on the church land, which iferved the dual purpose of acting as a screen to the offending advertisement and an exhortation —per medium of posters — to strike out the two top lines.
Evidently this disconcerting move caused some hard thinking in the red rib'oon camp. Obviously the competitors could not encroach on each other's territory, and In one case strategic moves were confined to the somewhat restricted surface of the brick wall. The reds' next move was disclosed further along the wall, towards the street, and clear of the hoarding, with the words, "How not to vote," an intimation which tended to destroy the efficiency of the blue appeal. Once more the blues rose to ■ the occasion, and by effectively screening the word "not" the reds' announcement now reads, "How to vote," and is in conformity with the appeal in regard to the obliteration oi.the two top lines. In bowling parlance, the blues are at present one up. and the next move in, the comedy, will be awaited with interest.
