At a military demonstration at the [Basins Reserve, Wellington, on Saturday, Lieut. S. Frickleton, v.C, vas prssented by Sir Alfred Robin with a sword of honour, the gift of the Greymouth, Caledonian Society. Mr Wm. Spurdle has been advise* that his son Ray, who left with HUv 40th Reinforcements, is returning to New Zealand by the Rimutaka, which is due on December 24th. . V!" Mr J. L. Sukuna, of Suva, an Old boy of Wnnganni College, is at present j-taying in Wanganui. Mr Sukuna, who is the son of senior native 'member of the Fiji Legislative Council, was studying in England when war broke out, and he went to the front with the French Legion. He was several "timeii. wounded, and subsequently received a commission in the British Army. ~ "_ The death took place at her residence, Napier, last week, of Mrs Marianne Davies, relict of the late Rev. V. .P. Davies, at the age of'; 9,$ years. Mrs Davies was the eldest daughter of the late Archdeacon Henry Williams, of the Bay of "Islands,, and sister of the late ArcJideacon Samuel Williams, of Te Aute, Hawke's Bay, and, the late T. C. Williams, of Wellington. '-,'; A pleasant little function took place at the local office of Mepsrs Levin and Co. last Friday afternoon, when the staff said farewell to one of their fellow employees, Mr Wi"'A. Curry, who has severed his conniption, with the firm- after three years' service to enter into a business partnership in the country. A presentation was made by the manager, Mr Hoggard, who asked, the departing member to accept a "scrap of paper" and their wishes for the best of luck in his neyr undertaking. .
Dr. Edgar H. Wilkins, medical-in-spector of schools for Southland, has been appointed Superintendent of Medical Inspection and Physical Education under the Education Department. The Medical inspection of school children up to the present has been carried on by district medical inspectors r-ithout a superintendent, and physical edu/ation has been without a director since the death of Mr Royd Garlick. Both Departments are now combined uittder one head, who will be stationed in Wellington and control tho work throughout New Zealand.
