WOMAN SHOT.
AFFRAY IN A MELBOURNE
SUBURB.
ESCAPEE RE-ARRESTED AND
CHARGED
MELBOURNE, October 12
A shooting affray occured in the slum area of Carlton on Saturday night, during which Mrs. Ada Gay was shot in the head and abdomen. She is in a very serious condition. Subsequently Edward Witschke, |.who recently escaped from a prison Van while on its way to Pentridge Gaol, was arrested and charged with shooting with inteqft to murder Mrs. Gay, and with shooting at James Reynolds her crippled brother, with intent to "murder.
Three men visited Mrs. Gay's house. She called her brother, and complained that the men had \niisulted her.
Reynolds approached the men, two of whom ran out of the house.
The other pointed a revolver and if?red, but missed Reynolds/ .
Mrs. Gay then attacked one of the men with the lire tongs, and as^fio retreated the intruder fired three shots, two of which struck Mrs. Gay.
