A large deputation of representatives of the various women's organisations waited upon the Prime Minister to-day to congratulate him upon what he had done in regard to the Women's Parliamentary Rights Bill, 'and to strengthen his hands, if necessary, to enable the new Bill to pass through the 'Legislative Council. Various speakers admitted that Mr. 'Massey had even gone further than ■tie promised last „ session in his efIforts on behalf of women.
The Prime Minister explained that •the Bill to enable women to stand for election to the House of Representatives had bean passed safely, but he was not certain as to what would become of the other measure. He :!iad done all that was possible in the "circumstances. Tfee fact that the Bill was a Government measure might influence the members of the Legislative Council to pass it into law. Mr. Massey explained the position of the Legislative Council Act, which makes the Council elective, and which it had been promised should be placed before Parliament again, prior to its becoming law. Personally, he thought / the Act 'would come, into effect next year. He »thought it just possible it would' be amended to allow a proportion of members to be nominated <
