APPOINTMENT OF A CHAIRMAN.

WELLINGTON, Sept. I

A brief statement in regard to the request oC the Alliance of Labour that the Government should appoint a chairman to preside over a further conference in regard to the coal'miners' demands was made by the Prime Minister to-day. Mr. Massey said he had been in consultation with the head of the Labour Department on the subject, and while there was nothing definitely decided, he could say that Cabinet was quite I prepared to accede to the request to appoint a chairman, and would be able to find a very good man for the [position.
