THE COLLEGIATE GAME

WIN FOR OLD BOYS

The annual match between Old Boys and the Wanganui Collegiate team was played yesterday on the school ground. The past students won easily by 22 points to 5. There was a large attendance of spectators. The weather was fine, but a high cross wind was not appreciated by .either players or spectators. Forward both sides were evenly matched, but the Old Boys had a much better lot of backs, which included Baddeley and Bryce of last year's Collegiate team and C. Baddeley and Strachan. In the game the Baddeley Bros, stood out by themselves, although their confreres Bryce and Stra2b.au also shaped well. In the school backs Stevenson *md James caught the eye most, al-! though there was little combined play of the kind that appeals to aj Kugby crowd. THE PLAY. ! The game was fast and open from \ the start, with fluctuating fortunes. Old Boys, who played in an assortment of colours, carried the game into the School half until Ormond ma,j. j sent the ball back. The School vim broke away well, and James, picking up cleanly from an over-run ball made a nice dash for the line but C. Baddeley saved well. Old Boys retaliated by carrying play to the other end. Strachan made a gx»od run, but went out -at the corner. From the throw in Hare secured and dived over to register first blood. R. Baddeley failed with a difficult shot. Coming to Rowe the Old Boys' custodian, he passed to Mayfleld in support an«i the latter went across unopposed. Stowe converted with a neat shot. Old Boys took the initiative in the second half, the Baddeley brothers playing a fine game. Twice the School repelled hard attacks. R. Baddeley eventually made a nice opening and seat Strachan across. Although the angle was difficult R. Baddeley piloted the ball safely over the bar.

From this stage onwards School was a beaten side, although they continued to make a game fight cf it. Old Boys' next score was the result of fine combination. From ihe scrum the ball went to Bryce to C. Badfleley. The latter, cut in cleverly, beat a couple of opponents, and then passed to Bryce^ who came up on tanoutside. The centre raced over and scored as he liked. C. Baddeley failed with the shot.

Old Boys' forwards broke away frdm the drop out and Potaka, the School half, saved well. The relief was only temporary, as R. Baddeley quickly worked the blind side of a scrum and passed to Straoaan, who galloped across. The shot was again unsuccessful.

School were forced twice in quick succession on the resumption of play. Old Boys sustained the pressure and from a nice opening made by Hare. Bryce scored near the posts. He made a good but unsuccessful effo't to convert.
