The Industries Commission will open its Wsinganui sititng at the Borough Council Chamber at 10 a.m. on the 9th April.

The Customs revenue of the port of New Plymouth for March was £5998. compared with £3917 in the 'previous March. Last year's revenue was £'p6,----232, as against £48,415 for the previous year.

The names of several well-known citizens are being mentioned as probab'e candidates for the Borough Council, ami a contest for the Mayoralty is assured, Cr. L. J .Sigl«y having consented to allow himself to be nominated.

At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday a man named Murray admitted l'ltreating a horse by riding it when it had a sore back. Senior-Sergt. Bourse saw the defendant riding tihe horse, which appeared to be swaying. The saddle was taken off, and under a couple of sacks a big sore was found on the animal's back. Mr Wyvern Wilson, who examined the horse, said it was a shocking case, and fined Murray £5 and costs.

Members uf the Dublin St. branch of the Protestant Political Association are notified by advertisement in another column ol! n meeting to be held for the consideration of important business tomorrow (Tuesday) evening..

On Saturday represenfcrtives of ths Wanganui Agricultural Association, with members dI the Borough Reserves Couunittee, inspected the proposed Show ground site which embraces a portion of Laird.Park. The first visit was merely for the purpose of discttsaing on the spot tlie1 desirability of tha site, which if the matter is gone <m with will necessitate the closing of a road. The Wanganui Agricultural Association officials will now go further into the matter and later will again aoproach the Council. .

At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday a man named F. Anderson appeared on remand on a charge of intent # to evade foreign service in the Expedition^ ary Forces. It was said that when the accused was called up he stated that his father was a Swede, and his mother rt German. Subsequently he went into camp, but upon getting leave, he did not return. He was finally court-mar-tialled. The police stated the accused now admitted that his stories about hiß nationality were untrue. Accused pleaded guilty. and was committed to the Supreme"Court at Wellington for sentence. ~

At the meeting-of the Feilding Patriotic Society on Friday afternoon, Mr J\ J. Bryoe, of Hinau, forwarded a cheque for £146 55., representing the -winnings of his horse Twilight in jumping competitions during the 1917-18 season. The cheque goes to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. Mr Bryce, in reply to a vote of thanks passed by acclamation, stated that as the war? was over. Twilight's ■work had concluded. Questidned as to Twilight's performances, Mr Bryce said sno had won on behalf of patriotic funds during the war period a total of £909 155.. all of which had gone to funds for wounded so'diers. Twilight had also won £200 at competitions before the war. Warm expressions of praise were used by members of the fcociet y regard ing Twilight as a war work* er.

The father of the late Anthony Wilding (the world's tennis champion, killed in the war), addressing a packed house in the Liberty Theatre, Christchurch, announced his conversion to Prohibition. Mr Wilding, -who is a noted King's Counsel, declared that ho welcomed the, term "Wowser," as applied to Liquor reform. On his last visit to England he had the great opportunity of a chat with Mr. Lloyd Georfge, who stated that the Liquor trftmc was so deeply estrenched m Britain as to make him almost hopeless. "But why." said Mr Lloyd George, "do' you not, ,m your own young country, •iiproot the Liquor and cast it out? It is utterly incapable of reform.'
