WORKERS' DWELLINGS.

AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL'S BIG

SCHEME

DROPPED FOR THE PRESENT

(Per Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, March 6

The City Council to-night adopted a recommendation by a committee of the whole Council that proposals for the erection of workers' dwellings, in connection with which a loan of £250,000 is proposed, be deferred. The report stated that though there were in the city a number of dwellings not desirable, the bvilding by-laws and sanitary inspection were sufficient safeguards against them being or becoming a menace to the public health. Farther, having regard to the existing financial obligations of the Covnuil, and in view of the reports of the Council's land advisers, the comiuittee was of opinion that action night be deferred at any rate for the present. The committee was also nf opinion that while several areas in the thickly-populated portion of the city might with advantage be remodelled, any such policy should not 'be adopted at present owing to the .financial obligations already undertaken. Another aspect for consideration was the high cost of building material and the difficulty of obtaining many lines.

The Council adopted a resolution that the works' committee be asked to consider the question of the possibility of remodelling an area in the city and providing some small houses for workers.

The Council also resolved that the Government be urged to form a model suburb for workers' houses at Orakei.

The Public Health authorities have instructed the District Health Officer to disinfect soldiers' kits on -the Port Melbourne and to pass all ■men through an inhalation chamber. >This is being carried out to-night, 'and the Port Officer says the work should be finished by 7.30 to-morrow ■morning and the ship then brought t-> the wharf and the men medically boared, the southern men leaving to-morrow evening.
