SEPARATION ALLOWANCES.
STATEMENT BY SIR JAMES

DUNEDIN, March 6
Referring to soldiers' allowances ■and gratuities, the Minister of Deience stated that the amount of separation allowance to married men who left before the Military Service Act came into operation has been increased to £495,000, allowing the Minister to make a separation allow- { ance .to a soldier's wife of 3s. per day. The machinery necessary to put that into operation will be prepared as soon as possible. The The Minister is nbt in a position to -make a definite statement regarding the distribution of the £1,255,000 for gratuities. Difficulties had arisen regarding details, and he wanted the uosition clearly defined before making a statement. The proposal of certain pay for a certain period of service might have to be reconsidered.
