MARTON.

Fairly good progress is being made "with, the erection of the new Government bakery and laundry at Marton Junction, though the general opinion is that if it were a private firm ..erecting the building it would have been completed long ago. For instance, those who have observed the daily progress of the structure in question at -Marton would never be guilty of alleging that an effort was being pade to establish a record in build-

ing. It is_ a good while- since the first block was laid, and yet there is a great deal to do-before the building is completed. As a matter of fact, if the departmental officers do not look out, the Kakariki freezing works will be finished first. Huge structures" have i gone lip at Eakariki the last few months, and the comparison in what has been accomplished clinches the argument that' there is a mighty big difference between private enterprise and the Government's' Avay of doing *'.things. Additional labour "should, </f course, be responsible for a speedier completion of the building, besides an >;arjier manufacture of broad and the •washing of Government linen. The operations of the State-owned bakery and laundry at Marton .will oe watched -with considerable interest.

Very heavy railway traffic is being experienced at Marton, and the railway staff are kept going at high pressure m coping with the traffic. There is a complete absence of the "Government stroke" 'in the railway yards, ' and from the stationniaster and the two foremen down to. the humblest member o| the staff, everyone is out to do really more -than his "bit" to meet the demands of the big district Marton Junction so' adequately serves. Huge quantities of timber are continually being drawn from the Mam -Irunk timber mills and forwarded to Wanganui for transit to Australia befiides truck-loads upon truck-loads of coal that conic from northern fields and are continually being despatched to various townships far and near. Iruiy the railway business at Marton Junction has developed tfemendously during the past few years, into a great concern, and one of the most pleasing aspects of the business is the practical -immunity from accident that obtains. 11ns in itself speaks volumes tor the care exercised by the heads cf the staff, and the fine example shown in only asking the men to do possible tasks withm a given time. The reference in the \Chronicle" last ..week to the laxity displayed in gettmg the town clock going again had the desired effect. The idle timepiece • -was taken down immediately, and it is ;ho P ed that it will not,be Jong before .the wheels will be moving a^ain and townsfolk, as well as. visitors, will be wed the trouble of following the movements of the sun to find out the *v% i & y< In the meantime. Mr C \\?A «+;?' a- S bee!] doin S its duty nobly and fitting in well with the times
