MANGAWEKA.

There is a scarcity of firewood in Mangaweka just now, wiriph seems odd considering the thousands of tons cf timber in the district which are looked upon as spoils. One lias only to take a train trip as far as Taihape to see the hundreds of trees standing or oa the ground waiting for some-one to put them to use. if all the land in the vicinity was cleared of the timber that is only" rotting, there would be enough to keep Mangaweka and other adjacent towns plentifuiy supplied with firewood, and fencing for years to come. This timber, it is understood, is available if any person has energy enough to tackle it, and willing to pay the royalty asked for. The enterprise should be well rewarded. In the meantime, Manga>veka wants wood.

..^ The enterprise of a Wanganui firm is certainly ia,r-reaching, and its operations in securing cream supplies from '.'.the Mangaweka district arc "most apparent. At various stations eoni...mencing from.as far north as Mataroa, are to be seen cans of cream consigned to Wanganui daily, and the , good treatment received appears to give general satisfaction. The secretary of the Taihape Dairy Co., however, has been on the warpath, in the -effort to show suppliers the alleged ; "error of their ways," but the continuous supplies going forward seem to indicate that there is every satisfaction "with the existing arrangements. Last 'month the local firm paid Is. 3d. for •butter-fat. \ ' •

Fruit prospects in Mangaweka are good this season, and there is likely to be a profitable yield. Flockmasters in' the district are experiencing considerable difficulty in securing suitable labour for shearfng, and •there appears to be plenty of scope •for either lads or young women in assisting rafter the wool has been taken off the.sheep's backs.
