: WASHINGTON, October 9. _ A United States warship fired on an Italian submarine, presumably in the Mediterranean, killing one officer and a seaman. The Italian submarine failed to respond to the signals. Mr Daniels has apologised to Italy. WASHINGTON, October 9. AMSTERDAM, October ?. The Handelsblad states that an agreement between Holland and Germany stipulates that submarines shall not attack Dutch colliers from England. AMSI^DAM, October 9. A number of Protestant clergymen in Germany have issued a manifesto stating that German Protestants are conscious that mutual Christian aims should be to promote righteous feelings, .and* they, therefore, extend the-hand of brotherhood to their co-religionists in enemy countries, adding: "In the name of Christianity, war must disappear from the earth."
