: WASHINGTON, October 9. _ A United States warship fired on an Italian submarine, presumably in the Mediterranean, killing one officer and a seaman. The Italian submarine failed to respond to the signals. Mr Daniels has apologised to Italy. WASHINGTON, October 9. The United States is determined that Dutch ships shall assist in carrying American cargoes, and has refused to supply bunker coal to the steamer Nieuwasberdara to enable the vessel to return from America
