POTATO PLANTING.

SIX MILES OP TUBERS,

FOREMAN'S REPORT,

There were forty-five volunteer helpers planting potatoes on Saturday afternoon at the Wanganui East Esplanade. There were several ladies carrying their buckets and dropping potatoes behind the spades. Splendid work was done and six miles of potat es were planted during the afternoon. If the showers had held off the work would have been completed, but this morning'it is hoped to have a few volunteers to finish the planting. During the week sixteen miles of potatoes were planted by spade alone, and the plough was kept going also, which would mean another eight miles, or a total of twenty-four miles, which is a very creditable piece of work for five days' work by volunteers, some of whom worked continuously from Tuesday morning till Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Sutherland again gave a delightful lunch and she and Mrs. Willis entertained the planters at afternoon tea. Three cheers were given for heir kindness in daily providing morning and afternoon tea and lunches for all.

In about two months' time volunteers will again be required for hoe work. Farmers who have inspected the plantation consider that the ground is the finest for potatoes on the coast, and predict a splendid crop should climate conditions be favourable and the crop well looked after.
