RED CROSS SHOP.

SUCCESSFUL OPENING,

The handy little shop erected for the Wanganui Sub-Centre of the N.Z. Branch of the British Red i Gross Association was successfully opened yesterday morning. The ladies of the Sub-Centre, with the co-operation of generous helpers, had made preparation for a busy day and the varied "stock displayed in the shop and the adjacent stalls was very attractive. Punctually at 10 o'clock, the capable Bugle Band of the Queen's Park School having previously made itself heard to go: d effect, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. E. Maclcay) introduced His Honor, Mr. Justice Chapman, who had kindly consented to officiate at the opening ceremony.

Mr. Justice Chapman said a" 3 had been pleased to accept the invitation with which he had been honoured. The Red Cross Society w"as one of the world's most beneficent rnstiti!tions, and the scope of its operations was both undenominational and International. Its success throughout the v/orld was due to the voluntary efforts of unselfish workers in evepy locality. He had had the opportunity of seeing the good work done by the Red Cross in other centres, and he had no doubt that the workers hi Wanganui were equally enthusiastic and successful. His Honor concluded by declaring the shop open for business, and by expressing the hope that the efforts of the*organisation would be crowned with success.

The singing of the National Anthem concluded the formal ceremony, and immediately upon its" conclusion business commenced in earnest, and throughout the day Mrs. Suisted and her willing helpers were kept busily engaged in disposing of the attractive contents of the shop and stalls.

The effort realised £71 Os 4d, the- details being:—Shop sales £38 14s 6d, work stall £7 3s 3d. flowers £17 s<j 6d, sweets £4 6s 4d, afternoon tea £3 ilO-s 9d.
