FATAL ACCIDENT.

NGUTUWEIU SETTLER KILLED

CRUSHED BY A FALLING LOG

A distressing accident occurred ?t Agutuwera, seven miles from Waitotara, yesterday, resulting in the death or Mr. Henry Phillips, a well-known settler m that district.

In company with a boy, Mr Phillips left, home with the intention of clearing a slip, and while they were working a- log came rolling down the bank. Mr Phillips called out a warning to the boy, but he was unable to get clear himself, with the result that the ]og struck him heavily in the chest.' The injured man was brought in to the Belverdale private hospital, where his death occurred early yesterday evening.

Mr Phillips was a married man with one child, and v/as about 28 years of age.

His mother lives at Aramoho and a brother, Mr George T. Phillips,' stbekImyer for the Wanganui Meat Freezing Go., resides at Fordell. Great sympathy will be expressed for Mrs. Phillips. Two other sons have been killed at the front, the news of the death of .one of them, "Toby,".being received quite recently.
