WOMEN POLICE.

Mr VHford (Hutt.)-.asked the AttorneyGeneral whether he will this session provide, the necessary legislation for the appointment of women police, their duties to be as follows: (1) To keep ycung children who are unprotected, from the. streets, especially at night; (a) to patrol the railway stations and wharves when long-distance trains an* steamers;come.in,'- in order to guard and advise women, girls and child- » who are strangers and have no friends awaiting them; (3) to patrol parks and other pleasure resorts, in order to protect women and girls; (4) to keep,an eye on women of the town, in order to prevent young girls from being entrapped • (5) to attend Courts in cases where offences against women and children are being dealt with; (6) to conduct investigations and; interrogations in cases of criminal offences against women and children; (7) to conduct investigations in cases of juvenile delinquency; and (8) to inspect common lodging-houses and apartment houses. (Note.—lii South-Australia th*e women police see that children under fourteen years of age, unless in charge of an adult, are off the streets at half-past I eight p.m. If they find it necessary to warn a girl; they should endeavour to visit her home and see that' her relatives are warned of her danger. The work of the women police should be largely of a preventive nature.) The Hon. Mr Herdman, (AttorneyGeneral) replied: The question submitted by the honourable gentleman is receiving consideration ,and the Attor-ney-General' will take an early opportunity of making a statement to the House in the matter.
