RIOT IN WELLINGTON.
WELLINGTON, August 13. As a sequel to a riot which occurred in the centre of the city last nighty eight men appeared at the Magistrate's Court to-'iay. It was stated that the trouble arose over the arre6t of a lireman who refused to leave licensed premises. The police were interfered with by the mates of the man, and later on a big crowd joined in the disturbance, which lasted about two hours. Some twenty police eventually appeared, and a mounted constable cleared the road. Harvey Nicholle, the. man who was the main cause of the disturbance, was sentenced to three months', in addition to fines. The cases against the others are proceeding.
